What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a procedure in which small surgical tools are used to remove fat from specific body areas. Fat is “liquefied” with a very thin needle into a solution, which then flows into the body through two-inch hoses. The hoses are attached to tubing that runs under the skin and out to ports located on nearby skin. When the patient is under anesthesia, these ports are opened to drain the fat. In general, liposuction can be a safe and effective procedure for reducing the size of fat deposits in the body.
How is liposuction performed?
Liposuction is performed through two main procedures: cannulation and aspiration.
In cannulation, the fat is removed from the body through a tube inserted under the skin. A small incision can be created at the insertion point. Then a tube called a cannula is inserted and, using a syringe-like device, liposuction is performed. Once the fat is sucked out of this area, it flows through another tube into a separate bag or collection system. This technique may be referred to as suction-assisted liposuction (SAL).
In aspiration, no incisions are made in the body. Instead, a needle attached to a syringe will break up and remove pockets of fat from targeted areas. When this method is used, a tube is inserted into the fatty area, and the surrounding blood vessels are sealed off to prevent any leakage of fat. The fat cells are then broken up by a needle that moves across the skin. The fluid full of fat cells then moves into a collection system or cup under the skin. This procedure may be referred to as manual liposuction (ML).
The main advantage of liposuction is that it can target and remove fat in hard-to-reach areas.
The most popular areas for liposuction are:
- Tummy or “love handles.”
- Hips and thighs
- Swollen glandular tissue under the chin, which produces an “Adam’s apple.”
Liposuction is an excellent procedure that should be considered for anyone unhappy with the way they look. Liposuction has different levels of success and should be discussed with your doctor to determine what will work best for you.
